To start the second part of My Soundtrack To The Reef this week I’ll be changing pace a bit from last week. The first two tracks are by one of my current favorite bands, Enemies. This Irish instrumental rock group blew my mind the first time I heard them. Their music is melodic and emotive; more than enough to get your foot tapping to the beat. Hong Kong’s Fish Street

It’s no wonder Tung Choi Street is commonly referred to as Fish Street or Goldfish Street. Two blocks of this avenue in Hong Kong are literally packed wall to wall with fish shops and open air fish markets. Primarily known as a selling area of goldfish and freshwater plants some vendors offer up the rarest fishes and corals found in saltwater.  continue reading…

Against the Ban

At the other end of the spectrum we have people with a solid and vested interest in the trade. Those gaining income or benefits from people and organisations in the trade or those supporting the industry for their own personal enjoyment. Hobbyists play a key role in this sector for being consumers of this natural resource and sometimes taking a strong stance to prevent increased prices or decreased availability. This group pick and choose data to suit their needs, often rejecting scientific data which goes against the hobby and rapidly circulating information that supports it. This group like the conservationists also fiercely defends its stance and is against government and its regulations which hinder the industry.

Seahorses…..for real?

You can’t help but feel a sense of wonder when you gaze into a seahorse tank. They really are quite majestic, but elegant creatures and even those who have no desire to ever own an aquarium can sit and stare for hours at these beautiful animals.

This week Eco-Lamps, otherwise known as Acan Lighting, announced that they will soon be slinging some exotic new LED spectrums not seen elsewhere in the industry yet. These new Vital-Wave 3 and 7 watt lamps will come in some strange new colors that should bring out colors and amounts of glow not seen in reef tanks yet.

Just when thought I had seen it all in aquarium LED lighting, Sunbrite is here to shake things up with an all new light, dubbed the F-Series, that can be controlled by an iPhone. Add to this that these lights are designed to replace 400 Watt metal halides, and you have a serious contender.
