Changes to Tunze Osmolator

MACNA 2011 brought out a bunch of products, and we couldn’t see it all. Lucky for us, there were other blogs there taking in the latest products and information. Brandon of AquaNerd caught something I would have never noticed about the Tunze Osmolator.

While drooling all over the new products at MACNA, we stumbled across a Tunze Osmolator that was disassembled and sitting open on a table at the Tunze booth. We looked over the auto top-off device with curiosity, being somewhat familiar with it, and were told that a few changes were being made. For starters…

What Kind of Lighting Are You Running Over Your Marine Tank?

The pole results are in, and I can’t say that I’m surprised. LEDs took the win with almost 47%, and following closely with 40% was T5s. This isn’t surprising because LEDs are the new trend, and T5s, or course, are usually the cheapest option to get a reef running. It’s unbelievable that some people out there still doubt the ability of LEDs to grow coral.

Metal Halide 10%
Power Compact 3.33%
LED 46.67%
T5 40%

Avast Marine CS2 Recirculating Cone Skimmer

Avast Marine recently unveiled a new skimmer called the CS2 Black Pearl, but why should we care. It’s a cone skimmer, but aren’t they all? It’s a recirculating skimmer, but that’s been done before. It’s got an auto riser tube cleaner which was big news a year ago. So why should we care? The answer is an innovation so simple that it could be overlooked as a simple aesthetic gimic. The answer is the smoked black acrylic used in its construction. This small detail in the Black Pearl’s construction will keep algae down inside the skimmer and keep it running more consistantly.
