MIT Creates Self Cleaning Reflection Free Glass

Recently it was announced that MIT researchers have created a glass surface texture that is both reflection free and also appears to be nearly self-cleaning. This new glass uses conical nanotextures to accomplish these amazing feats, and it’s hoped that it will be easy enough to manufacture that we may see it in common devices in the future.

Russian Scientists to Investigate Recently Spotted White Orca

A recent, rare white orca, named Ice Berg, that was spotted in the North Pacific recently will be the center of an expedition soon by Russian scientists to investigate the occurrence. The wale’s massive dorsal fin was first spotted near the Commander Islands in the North Pacific by researchers from  the universities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

A new study out has found that acidification studied on the Great Barrier Reef may actually change the behavior of baby corals so much that they may be labeled as stupid. This research has shown that it may affect the way corals settle on the reef.

Bacteria That Want to be Eaten

Bacteria

Recently findings have shown that some types of bacteria actually advertise their presence in order to get eaten. These species have been documented to use bio-luminescence to purposely get eaten by zooplankton. While inside the plankton, they grow to the point that they make their host glow which advertises to larger animals to feed on the zooplankton. When all is said and done, the bacteria has not been digested and it’s gained a lift across vast stretches of ocean. Read more »

New Species of Hammerhead Shark

A new species of Hammerhead shark has officially been confirmed. This new find closely resembles the scalloped hammerhead which has been up for protected status. This raises concerns for both species due to the fact that both were most likely counted as being the same and thus both most likely have much lower numbers than previously thought.

James Cameron Makes Record Dive to Challenger Deep in Mariana Trench

Famed director James Cameron’s plans were announced as a success this week after his dive to the deepest location on the Earth, Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. Just the third person ever to visit the bottom of the trench, Cameron made the solo dive in a specially designed submersible.
