wpid-IMG_20120330_115849.jpg

Maxi-Jet pumps have been a mainstay in reef aquariums for years now, and recently they finally did a large revamp on the design of these in tank power heads. Industry standards have steadily moved towards propeller driven pumps during the last few years, and conversion kits for the Maxi-Jet line have been a popular upgrade. This newest line from Marineland, however, includes everything to run them three ways including as the classic power head and as a propeller pump. See how they stack up after the break.

Orphek DIF50xp Prototype Reviewed

wpid-IMG_20120315_162825.jpg

Recently I reported on a new pendant LED light series coming from Orphek called the DIFxp series that will be sporting some interesting new multi-chip LEDs. These lights;  the DIF30xp, DIF50xp and DIF100xp; will use a revolutionary chip that rather than only containing one diode color, like most other multi-chips, will pack in several. This is one of those lights that I was very interested in getting a closer look at, and lucky for me, Orphek sent one of their prototypes out for review. Check it out in full after the break.

Red Sea Reef Foundation Pro Test Kit, Reviewed

photobucket-3400-1331751974772

I received my Red Sea Reef Foundation Pro test kit from Bulk Reef Supply, this week, and am definitely pleased with it. The kit includes the essential tests anyone should have for a reef tank (calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium) and is supposed for be good for 75, 75, and 60 tests, respectively. [I test maybe twice per month, so this should lat me a good while.]. For $45 it is definitely a steal from Bulk Reef Supply, opposed to buying the kits separately, and paying some-20 dollars each.

Zeovit Coral Snow Reviewed

It’s been nearly a month now since I began testing a couple of Zeovit’s products, thanks to Proline Aquatics, and it seems that I’ve come far enough to draw some short-term conclusions on their Coral Snow. As you saw when I received this product, it is designed to naturally cure a few key problems in marine aquariums. What I didn’t mention, or know at the time, is that at about $60 for 500ml of Coral Snow it’s no budget chemical. Check out how it performed after the break.

Brian Skerry’s “Ocean Soul” Reviewed

Brian Skerry ocean soul

I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Brian Skerry’s “Ocean Soul” for Christmas this year. I have been unable to sit down and gaze at this book long enough to truly enjoy Skerry’s phenomenal photography until recently. This book features his some of his best shots from the last 20 years. A brief autobiography starts it off. From there on the book is jam packed breathtaking images with a few of Skerry’s quotes and views on the ocean and it’s wonders. Breaking up the shots are some stories behind the picture itself. This in my opinion was one of the most captivating parts of this book. The book is heavy and quality bound. The pages are thick enough to not worry about tearing. However, what stands out to me the most is the quality of these shots. Not only on Skerry’s part by taking great pictures, but it is very clear that a quality printer was used. All in all, it was a very interesting book that kept me eager to turn it’s pages over and over again. It would make a great addition to a reefer’s coffee table or fish room alike. Here are some of some the shots featured in this book.

More of Brian Skerry’s photography from “Ocean Soul” after the break.
